THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES

The award-winning play is based on V-Day Founder/playwright Eve Ensler‘s interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace, the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For 20 years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public and brought a deeper consciousness to the conversation around ending violence against women and girls.

An Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone, The Vagina Monologues introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six-year-old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a vagina workshop participant, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and a feminist happy to have found a man who “liked to look at it.”

A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT AND A PRAYER

WRITINGS TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN & GIRLS

A groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle. These diverse voices rise up in a collective roar to break open, expose, and examine the insidiousness of violence at all levels: brutality, neglect, a punch, even a put-down. The volume features such authors and topics as: Maya Angelou on women’s work; Dave Eggers on a Sudanese abduction; Edwidge Danticat on a border crossing; Susan Miller on raising a son as a single mother; Sharon Olds on a bra; Patricia Bosworth on her own physically abusive relationship and many more.

These writings are inspired, funny, angry, heartfelt, tragic, and beautiful. But above all, together they create a true and profound portrait of this issue’s effect on every one of us. A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer is a call to the world to demand an end to violence against women.

“Spellbinding, funny, and almost unbearably moving…Written with a bluntness that is nevertheless intensely lyrical, it is both a work of art and an incisive piece of cultural history, a poem and a polemic, a performance and a balm and a benediction.” – Variety

“Ensler breaks taboos by talking, talking and talking some more—stripping fear and shame from what she celebrates here. It makes for quite a party. Funny, outrageous, emotionally affecting, and occasionally angry…The Vagina Monologues confront words to demystify and disarm them. In so doing, Ensler disarms the audience too.” – Associated Press

“If Ms. Ensler is the messiah heralding the second wave of feminism, and a lot of people think she is, it is partly because she’s a brilliant comedian…The audience…was overwhelmingly adoring.” – The New York Times

“The most exhilarating part is, no kidding, her extremely virtuosic way with a series of orgasmic moans…Ensler, a writer-performer with a good-natured but seriously evangelical mission about this body part, must be enjoying her success in getting the word out on such a legendarily unmentionable, mythologized and misunderstood fact of life…” – NY Newsday
